This is cool. I am also looking for a p-car project similar to this and can’t decide on a shell or motor set up. Care to elaborate on if this transmission can handle the extra torque? Do you need an adapter plate to mount the engine and transmission? (I know Kennedy sells them and presume you have looked at http://www.renegadehybrids.com/ but their prices are outrageous.) Are you making custom motor mounts? What are you going to run for engine management? Were you able to recoup some cost by selling the boxster transmission?
The 6 speed should handle the power no problem. I’m not sure about LS7 power, but it should be fine for L33. From what I read, the axles are the weakest link.
I’m buying the mounting kit from Renegade, which also includes the Kennedy Engineering adapter plate. I wish I could make the mounts myself, but I want to get this project finished asap, since I’m using my friends business warehouse for the build. Due to the nature of the engine placement, making engine mounts is not as simple as it would be in a front engine car.
I will be using the Porsche ECU to take care of all the car stuff, and a standalone LS1 harness to manage the engine. The Porsche ECU will also need to know the engine water temperature, so I will tap a Porsche sensor into the second V8 head. Since the L33 reluctor wheel is 24x and Porsche accepts 58x, I will have to figure something out to make the tach work. Possibly some Arduino solution.
I posted last night, but I guess it glitched. I totally understand getting the mounts and stuff from Renegade, it does make it a whole lot easier if you have the spare funds. What breaks in the axles? Inners or outters? Or is it an issue with positioning? DSS can make you whatever custom axles that you want/need. Did you get the shell with a motor (i mistyped transmission above) and meant was it easy to sell if you did?

Really sorry about a late response. For some reason, WordPress decided to put your comment in the spam folder. I’m not exactly sure how the axles break and I didn’t see much information about it online. I’m not too concerned myself since my engine will only be putting out around 320 hp for now. Thanks for the tip on DSS, I will keep them in mind.
The car did not come with the motor. The previous owner was actually planning on doing the V8 swap, so he sold all the unnecessary bits, but later decided to scrap the project altogether.
I did see both of the 996 builds. The black 996 blog is actually what I read right before pulling the trigger on my project.
As for the tach, you can simply tap into the crank sensor wire if you have a new GM engine with a 58x reluctor. Mine being an older L33 (just like LS1 and LS6), comes with a 24 tooth wheel. I will have to do some signal processing to make my tach work.
